The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) is a premier Non-Governmental Organization in Africa with a mandate to promote human rights-centred governance at all levels. We were established and incorporated on April 9, 1992, by Kenyans exiled in the United States, and later registered in Kenya on January 20, 1994. The founders of KHRC are among the foremost leaders and activists in the struggle for human rights and democratic reforms in Kenya and beyond. As a domestic and transnational organization, we have pioneered and sustained impactful interventions at county and national levels, advanced advocacy in regional and international spaces, and supported countries navigating complex political transitions across Africa.
Our work is grounded in advancing equality, dignity, and inclusion for all, with particular attention to communities that experience systemic discrimination and exclusion. This includes promoting and protecting the rights of LGBTQI+ persons, refugees, and other marginalized groups through strategic litigation, policy advocacy, research, movement building, public education, and human rights monitoring. Our approach curbs violations by applying a demand-and-supply model of human rights and a political strategy that mobilizes people to claim and defend their rights while holding state, corporate, and individual duty bearers accountable.
